15 Simple Acts of Self Care

Most of us have so many responsibilities that it’s easy to forget to take care of ourselves. This is a major pitfall for our health and well-being. Self care has to come first if we want to live a healthy life and be able to positively impact those around us.

At first, you may feel silly, or even selfish, about prioritizing a bath, yoga class, or 20 minutes of silence. Especially when you’ve got homework to do, or an early morning, or kids who need baths, or any other number of things that seem more important. I’m here to tell you once and for all – Self care is important.

Self care refers to the many, unique ways you respect, restore and manage the different facets of your well-being.

Self care makes you a better friends and best. When you feel happy and confident, you will be able to help others and value yourself. Self care activates the relaxation response (counter to the fight-or-flight response) which helps to prevent adverse health implications of chronic stress.

There’s a thousand different ways to care for yourself. You’ll figure out what works best for you and when. It’s a great journey to figure out how to truly love and care for yourself.

15 Simple Acts of Self Care

  1. Take deep belly breaths. In your nose, out your mouth.
  2. Read a good book.
  3. Get 8 hours of sleep. Good, restoritive sleep.
  4. Move. Everyday.
  5. Smile for 20 seconds. It will make you happier.
  6. Drink some water. And then some more.
  7. Light a wonderful smelling candle.
  8. Try yoga and stretch.
  9. Turn up the radio and just dance.
  10. Go outside for 15 minutes. Fresh air is good for you.
  11. Take a long bath. Add some essential oils.
  12. Write yourself a love letter.
  13. Enjoy a cup of warm lemon water.
  14. Create something extraordinary.
  15. Enjoy your favorite meal. Mindfully.

I chose these activities because I feel they are very achievable. They don’t require any expensive classes or a huge time commitment. They can be fit right into your everyday. It’s important to find little acts like this for those days where we feel there isn’t a spare minute.

Some of these acts of self care seem too simple to make a difference in your health or wellbeing but I encourage you not to dismiss the collective power small acts have. No matter how trivial the act may seem, by regularly treating yourself with love, kindness, and compassion you will make a big different in your happiness and wellbeing.

  1. Thank you for this! And for me, self care is spending quality time with my husband and the dogs (preferably in Wales or Scotland but even our daily walks are therapeutic) 🙂
